Beside the various cosmetic procedures that Dr. Liu performs, he also performs functional surgeries to correct abnormalities associated with the aging eyes and complications that arise after previous eyelid surgeries. Among the functional surgeries, Dr. Liu has expertise in Ectropion and Entropion surgeries.

Ectropion
Ectropion is the abnormal outward turning of the eyelid. Patients who have ectropion have saggy lower lids that leaves the eye exposed and dry. It is caused by the weakening of delicate muscles that hold the eyelid alongside the eye. Eyelid burns or skin disease may also cause this problem. Excessive tearing is very common with ectropion but unfortunately wiping the tears worsens the sagging. Ectropion is most common among people over the age 60.

Entropion
Entropion is the abnormal inward rotation of the eyelid. This usually results from a muscle spasm but can be caused from trauma or inflammation from eye diseases. When the eyelid turns inwards, the lashes rub against the eye and results in irritation, tearing, redness and sensitivity to light and wind. If entropion is not treated, eye ulcers may form. With surgery, the eyelid can be turned outward to its normal position, protecting the eye and rectifying these problems.

These are eyelid conditions that not only develop spontaneously and compromise the integrity of the eye, but they can also arise as complications from eyelid surgery. . The goal of ectropion/entropion surgery is not only to correct the malposition of the eyelid but to also ensure that adequate protection of the eye is achieved along with a suitable cosmetic result. The surgery is performed under light sedation with local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes to perform
